A porcelain teacup and saucer from the Old Country Roses series by Royal Albert, made in England in the second half of the twentieth century. The rose motif in red, pink and gold on a cream ground is executed in the characteristic floral style of the series. Both pieces are in good vintage condition.
Old Country Roses was introduced in 1962 and became one of the most produced porcelain patterns in the world, sold in more than a hundred countries. The pattern draws on the tradition of nineteenth-century English floral porcelain, translating it into a postwar idiom that is more accessible and more vivid. A single cup and saucer from this series carries something paradoxical: it is at once ubiquitous and personal, an object found in almost every English household yet always belonging to one particular table.
