Tea Tin, Provinces d'Antan, Tisane du Maquis, France - Corsica

Curator's note

The maquis is not just a landscape but also a scent: a blend of wild herbs, resin and blossom that has given Corsica its nickname "the scented island". This tin attempts to capture that in image, and does so with some success.

A rectangular tea tin by the French brand Provinces d'Antan, made for Tisane du Maquis, an organic herbal infusion based on a Corsican recipe with digestive properties. The tin has a hinged lid and a colourful illustration on a dark background with a gilded border: a Corsican coastal landscape featuring red cliffs, a white village, a view of the sea, goats and a rich maquis vegetation with cacti, red berries, citrus fruits and wild flowers. The interior has a gold-coloured finish. The tin shows light signs of use on the exterior, consistent with age and use.

Provinces d'Antan is a French speciality food brand focused on regional products, presented in a nostalgic illustrative house style that evokes French provincial tradition before industrialisation. The illustrations on the tins are designed as evocations of specific regions, in this case Corsica, with its characteristic maquis, the dense scrubland vegetation that gives the island its scent and identity. The tin is both decorative and functional and fits within the French tradition of carefully packaged regional produce.
