A porcelain terrine in the form of a swan, hand-painted in cobalt blue on white glaze with refined brushwork and a soft gradation of colour. The body of the swan forms the bowl, the neck and head serve as the handle of the lid. The decoration combines feather details with ornamental motifs referencing the Delftware and Chinese export traditions. The piece is in good condition with minor signs of use, including a small chip to the rim, visible in the photographs.
Swan-shaped tableware has a long history in European decorative ceramics. The swan, as a symbol of elegance, was frequently used in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries as a model for sauce boats, terrines and sugar bowls. In the twentieth century the form remained popular in decorative production, with hand-painted blue and white versions a regular feature of the European market. This example has the quiet weight of an object that took its purpose seriously.
