Postcard Wanterbach, Luxembourg's Little Switzerland, valley near Berdorf

Black-and-white postcard of the Wanterbach valley in Luxembourg's Little Switzerland, published by Kunstverlag P.C. Schoren, Luxembourg, as number 2 of the Serie Müllertal. The composition looks through a group of slender birch trunks in the foreground toward a massive sandstone formation on the right in the background, whose projecting overhang stands out against the open sky. On the forest floor lie scattered boulders among young trees and ferns. The printed caption "Petite Suisse luxembourgeoise - Wanterbach" appears at the bottom. The card is in good condition.

The Wanterbach, in Luxembourgish Wanterbaach, is a stream valley near Berdorf and forms together with the neighbouring Siweschlëff a single natural area today known as Geolandscape Wanterbaach-Siweschlëff. The valley is characterised by vertical sandstone walls laid bare by erosion, where climbing clubs still practise wild climbing today. The region has belonged to the UNESCO Global Geopark Mëllerdall since 2015. The composition on this card emphasises not the spectacular but the atmospheric: the birch trunks create a foreground screen that draws the viewer into the valley, a pictorialist approach characteristic of the early twentieth century. The publisher's line without the "Bahnhof" addition places the card most likely in the period from around 1910 to 1920.
