Postcard Silver Wedding Wilhelmina Hendrik 1926 Proof Card J. Kwak

Curator's note

The sailing ship bearing the letter H refers to Prince Hendrik and draws on Dutch maritime self-imagery, a motif that recurs throughout commemorative print around the House of Orange-Nassau.

Postcard issued to commemorate the silver wedding anniversary of Queen Wilhelmina and Prince Hendrik, 1901 to 1926. The front shows portrait medallions of the royal couple flanking that of Princess Juliana, arranged above a stylised sailing ship bearing the letter H on its sail, enclosed within an exuberant ornamental frame with heraldic shields and the royal coat of arms. The card is printed on thick board and edged with an orange border lined with a silver inner band, an execution that refers directly to the occasion. Signed J. Kwak, dated 1926, and published by G. van Heek in Rotterdam. The card is in good condition.

The reverse bears the stamp Monsterkaart in orange, across the correspondence field. A monsterkaart, or proof card, served as a sample or specimen copy used by publishers and sales agents to show the print run to retailers before production began. Because they could not circulate as postal value, such cards were made in limited numbers and remain scarcer in the philatelic and graphic collecting world than the regular issue. Kwak's composition combines art deco ornamentation with maritime symbolism, a visual language characteristic of Dutch commemorative print in the interwar period.
