Postcard Schnellert, Luxembourg's Little Switzerland, rock formation

Curator's note

The printed note "Schreibraum gültig im inneren deutschen Verkehr" recalls that Luxembourg maintained its own postal service at this time, while the Saar region, where this card was printed, still belonged entirely to the German postal territory.

Black-and-white postcard of the Schnellert in Luxembourg's Little Switzerland, published by the Kartonnagenfabrik und Kunstdruckerei Sulzbach-Saar. The image shows a characteristic overhanging sandstone formation shaded by beech trees, with a seated woman at the lower right giving scale to the massif. The printed caption "Petite Suisse luxembourgeoise - Schnellert" appears in the lower part of the composition. The card is in good condition.

The Schnellert belongs to the forest complex around Müllerthal in the east of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg, where Luxembourgish Lias sandstone has been shaped over millions of years by erosion into gorges, overhangs and monolithic blocks. The region was christened "Petite Suisse" by tourist guides in the late nineteenth century and has been part of the UNESCO Global Geopark Mëllerdall since 2015. The reverse bears the multilingual inscription of the Universal Postal Union together with the note "Schreibraum gültig im inneren deutschen Verkehr", placing the card in the transitional period between undivided and divided backs, around 1905 to 1915.
