Postcard Princess Juliana Illustrated Portrait 1946 Ingel Kruseman

Curator's note

The string of pearls and the modest drop earrings form the only adornment in an otherwise unembellished portrait, a restraint that directs attention to the face rather than to rank.

Postcard with an illustrated portrait of Princess Juliana, signed Ingel and dated 1946. The portrait shows her frontally, with her hair up, wearing a pearl necklace and pearl earrings, against a plain light background. The card is a colour reproduction after a drawing and was published by J. Philip Kruseman in The Hague, under number I.K. 143. The card is in good condition.

The card is part of a signed portrait series of the Royal House that the publisher Kruseman issued in the first post-war years, drawn by Ingel, with companion cards showing Prince Bernhard and Princess Beatrix. This card is identified in collector circles as a portrait of Princess Juliana. In 1946 Juliana was crown princess; she would succeed her mother Wilhelmina as queen in 1948. The plain, idealised portrait, without ceremony or setting, places the emphasis on the person, an approach that distinguishes the series from the photographic occasional cards of the same period.
