Postcard with a colour reproduction of the poster Folies-Bergère, Emilienne d'Alençon, tous les soirs by Jules Chéret from 1893, published by Fernand Hazan in Paris under number 1141 and probably issued between 1960 and 1975. The reverse carries the inscriptions Reproduction réservée S.P.A.D.E.M. and Fernand Hazan, éditeur, Paris, with the bilingual caption in French and English. The card is unused and in good condition.
Jules Chéret (1836-1932), the father of the modern advertising poster, designed this poster for the Folies-Bergère where Emilienne d'Alençon (1869-1946) was performing. This dancer and courtesan, together with Liane de Pougy and La Belle Otero, belonged to the so-called Trois Grâces of the Parisian demi-monde: courtesans who held the male elite of the Belle Époque under their spell. The composition is typically Chéretesque: the dancer floats in pink taffeta and lace in the upper part of the image, while below a gentleman in evening dress ducks away in panic beneath his yellow umbrella, a parody of male confusion in the face of feminine seduction. Chéret signed and dated 93 in the lower right. The original poster was printed by the Imprimerie Chaix, Ateliers Chéret, at 20 rue Bergère in Paris. This Hazan reproduction belongs to the same post-war series of poster postcards as the Diaphane card number 1140.
