Postcard Jeune Satyre joueur de flûte Louvre Armand Noyer

Curator's note

Noyer chose a black background that literally lets the marble emerge from the darkness; the flute-playing satyr feels more like an apparition than a museum object.

Postcard reproducing a photograph of the marble sculpture Jeune Satyre joueur de flûte held in the Musée du Louvre, numbered 384 and bearing catalogue number 594, published by Armand Noyer in Paris under the monogram A.N. The reverse carries the inscription Fabrication Française and the card is unused. The card is in good condition.

The sculpture reproduced is a Roman copy from the first or second century AD, after a Hellenistic original generally attributed to the circle of Praxiteles or Lysippos. It depicts a young satyr, wearing the nebris or leopard skin, playing a transverse flute while leaning against a tree trunk. The work came from the Borghese Collection, which included two nearly identical examples (numbers 594 and 595), and was acquired in 1807 by Napoleon for the Louvre. The card dates from the nineteen-twenties or thirties and was published by Armand Noyer, a Parisian publisher known for his refined bromide reproductions of masterpieces from the major Paris museums.
