Early museum postcard with a sepia reproduction of "Idylle" by French painter Jean-Jacques Henner (1829-1905), published by LL (Lévy et ses Fils) in Paris under number 240, with the notation "Musée du Luxembourg, Paris". The image shows two female nudes at a stone water basin in a dark landscape — one seated with her back to the viewer, the other standing and looking downward. The atmospheric treatment of light and shadow is characteristic of Henner's style. The reverse bears the multilingual "Union Postale Universelle" inscription in six languages, dating the card to before the international standardisation of the postcard format in 1905. Unused and blank.
Jean-Jacques Henner was an Alsatian painter who, after the Franco-Prussian War of 1870, chose French nationality and became one of the most celebrated artists of the Third Republic in Paris. His work distinguished itself from the academic mainstream through a particular attention to atmosphere, twilight and the almost tangible silence that surrounds his compositions. The Musée d'Henner in Paris, opened in 1924, is still dedicated to his work. The LL series of the Musée du Luxembourg was one of the earliest and most widely distributed photographic documentations of a French state museum.
