Postcard Gustave Crauk Les Trois Grâces Petit Palais Paris

Curator's note

Crauk gave each of the three women a different stance, departing from the symmetrical traditional Three Graces: what emerges is a silent upward movement, as if they are presenting the Cupid child as an offering.

Postcard reproducing a photograph of the marble sculpture group Les Trois Grâces portant l'Amour by Gustave Crauk, numbered 62 in the series Palais des Beaux-Arts de la Ville de Paris, published by Armand Noyer in Paris under the monogram A.N. The reverse carries the inscription Fabrication Française and the card is unused. The card is in good condition.

Gustave Crauk (1827-1905), Prix de Rome and a celebrated sculptor of the Third Republic, completed this marble group in 1892-1893. The composition depicts three nude female figures, evoking the classical Graces Aglaia, Euphrosyne and Thalia, who together lift a winged Cupid. The work was acquired in 1908 by the City of Paris for the Petit Palais, where it stood until 1931; it was subsequently transferred to the town hall of Montreuil. The card, published by Armand Noyer probably between 1908 and 1931, thus preserves the image of the marble in its original museum setting.
