Luxembourgian postcard from the early twentieth century showing a black-and-white phototype of the Goldkaul in the Petite Suisse luxembourgeoise, the Mullerthal region of eastern Luxembourg. The image shows the imposing sandstone wall with its characteristic horizontal erosion strata and irregular cuttings, flanked by slender birch trunks that grow through the frame. In the lower right, a small male figure with hat leaning against a tree trunk, serving as a scale reference and making the monumentality of the rock formation palpable. Below the image, the caption reads "Petite Suisse luxembourgeoise Goldkaul" with the LUX publisher's mark. Published by Kunstverlag P.C. Schoren in Luxembourg as number 47 in the Mullerthal Series. The verso is unwritten and unposted, with a divided back. The card is in good condition.
The Goldkaul, located near Berdorf in the heart of the Petite Suisse luxembourgeoise, is among the most photographed sandstone formations of the Mullerthal. The area between Echternach, Berdorf and Consdorf is characterised by deeply cut valleys, detached rock blocks and overhanging walls, shaped by millions of years of erosion of the Luxembourg sandstone. From the end of the nineteenth century onward, the region developed into a favoured destination for walkers, nature photographers and geologists from Luxembourg, Germany and Belgium. The photographer places the figure against the rock wall here as a conscious compositional technique: the human scale makes geological time palpable, and the birch trunks fragment the picture plane in a way that recalls Japanese woodblock prints more than classical topographical photography.
