Postcard Casselt, Luxembourg's Little Switzerland, walker on forest path

Curator's note

The walker is a Rückenfigur, a back-turned figure in the Romantic landscape tradition of Caspar David Friedrich: he invites the viewer to look with him, to enter the landscape. The photographer uses this tested composition to turn a documentary view into a pictorial invitation.

Black-and-white postcard of a walker on the path near the Casselt in Luxembourg's Little Switzerland, published by Kunstverlag P.C. Schoren, Luxemburg-Bahnhof, as number 1 of the Serie Müllertal. The composition shows a man in a long coat and hat, photographed from behind, ascending a narrow stony path between an overhanging sandstone wall to the right and a tree trunk with shrubs to the left. In the background, conifers stand out against the plateau's edge. The printed caption "Petite Suisse luxembourgeoise - Partie près de Casselt" appears at the bottom. The card is in good condition.

The Casselt, now spelt Kaasselt, is an imposing sandstone formation and viewpoint rising to 351 metres between Berdorf and Grundhof. From this plateau a wide panorama opens out over the Sauer valley and the forests of the Eifel on the opposite bank. The path shown on this card leads via hairpin bends along the foot of the first massive rock formations, a classic route in the old hiking guides of the Petite Suisse from the early twentieth century. The region has belonged to the UNESCO Global Geopark Mëllerdall since 2015. The LUX emblem and the series number 1 place the card most likely at the beginning of the Schoren series, around 1905 to 1915.
