A demure and elegant carte-de-visite of a woman in a dark, flared dress with lace details and a narrow belt, photographed by W. H. Kent , active in London in the second half of the 19th century.
She stands next to a richly decorated table with a plant, a typical element of the Victorian portrait studio.

The photograph is printed in warm sepia on albumen paper, signed "WH Kent, Photo, London" on the front. The back shows the studio address: St. George Place (Opposite Albert Gate), Knightsbridge, London .

Technique: Albumen print on cardboard ( carte-de-visite )
Dimensions: approx. 10.4 × 6.3 cm
Condition: Good; slight discoloration at the bottom, sharp print and original contrast retained
Origin: London, England

This photograph embodies the Victorian ideals of dignity and control—the pose is calm, the gaze slightly introspective, and the clothing carefully chosen to convey social status and respectability.
WH Kent was one of the early generation of London photographers active just after the rise of the carte-de-visite craze, when portrait photography first became accessible to the middle class.
