A porcelain lidded bowl in pumpkin form, hand-painted in blue on white glaze with floral motifs and a zigzag border along the shoulder. The body is vertically lobed, the lid topped with a cobalt blue knob. The base carries a stamp in Chinese characters and the inscription "Made in China". The piece is in excellent condition, undamaged.
Blue and white porcelain with floral decoration belongs to the longest-running traditions in Chinese ceramics, and was produced on a large scale in the twentieth century for both the domestic market and export. The pumpkin form, with its vertical ribs and rounded silhouette, is a classical shape attested as early as the Song dynasty and revisited ever since. This example, with its careful painting and clear glaze, belongs to that long line.
