A porcelain dog sculpture depicting a seated dog with long ears and a gently raised head. The posture is calm and composed, the expression attentive without drama. Form and proportions suggest a spaniel type, a breed that served frequently as a model in the European decorative tradition. The piece is glazed and hand-painted in warm brown and cream tones, with a sheen that emphasises the flowing lines of the coat. On the underside, an opening is visible, characteristic of twentieth-century porcelain animal figures.
The spaniel as a decorative motif has deep roots in the European ceramic tradition. From the eighteenth century onwards, English and continental potteries produced dog figures for the domestic interior, with the spaniel a favourite for its elegant silhouette and associations with loyalty. In the twentieth century the type remained popular in the mass production of decorative animal figures, with hand-painted versions in earth tones a regular part of the range.
