Lazzaroni Amarettini di Saronno Tin

Curator's note

The round steamship medallion dates back to 1888, the year Lazzaroni launched its first export line to the United States; the small vessel has appeared on nearly every package since, carrying the founder's engraved signature.

Tall rectangular tin from D. Lazzaroni and C. of Saronno, printed on tinplate in a deep carmine red set against orange borders and black and white ornament. The four sides carry the firm's full iconographic repertoire: the Esportazione steamship, an anchor wreathed in laurel, the arms of Savoy beneath the royal crown, and the medals awarded to the bakery from the nineteenth century onward. The interior is bright tinned; the lid closes with a light snap. The tin is in good condition.

Lazzaroni was founded in 1888 in Saronno, northwest of Milan, and built its reputation on the dry amaretti still wrapped in their crackling paper. The export version, recognisable by its English text and the 14.1 OZ marking, reached delicatessens across North America and Northern Europe from the 1980s onward, where the red silhouette stood on the shelf between panettone and biscotti. Beyond its original function, the tin offers a presence that settles easily into a kitchen, a studio, or a bookshelf.
