De kunst van het kijken, the Story of Photography, Ian Jeffrey

Curator's note

Jeffrey writes not as an archivist but as a looker, that is what makes this book readable in a way that most histories of photography are not.

A Dutch-language edition of Ian Jeffrey's survey of the history of photography, published by Ludion in 2009. The book presents over a hundred photographers in chronological order, with analyses of their work and the broader development of the medium. Jeffrey, critic and teacher, goes beyond cataloguing: he shows how the practice of photography evolved and by what criteria the discipline defined itself. Separate chapters address pivotal moments in the history of the medium, including the two world wars. Hardcover, 384 pages.

Ian Jeffrey (1942) is a British art critic and photography historian, associated with Goldsmiths University of London. He has published on the history of English photography and written introductions to the work of photographers including Bill Brandt and Tony Ray-Jones. This survey, originally published in English as Photography: A Concise History, appeared in several European language editions and remains an accessible but rigorous introduction to the history of the medium.
