Icon of deesis

Icon of deesis . A deesis (Greek: δέησις, prayer, supplication or worship) is a Christian representation of three figures that often appears in the usual iconography of the eastern churches.

The performance shows Christ on a throne as the ultimate judge. He holds a Bible, open or closed, in his left hand. Christ is depicted frontally. Standing to his right Mary, his mother and standing on his left side John the Baptist, his forerunner or pioneer. Both are in the intercession pose: depicted in profile, slightly bent forward and with their arms and hands in a supplicating gesture. The form with three figures is called the small deesis.
