Holy card Nossa Senhora de Fátima Angel's Prayer Portugal

Curator's note

The Angel's Prayer precedes, in the Fátima tradition, the better-known Marian apparitions; this card brings the crowned statue and the words of the Angel onto a single sheet, joining the two chronological layers of the narrative.

Portuguese holy card of Nossa Senhora de Fátima, issued in the second half of the twentieth or early twenty-first century by a Portuguese publisher of religious imagery, with serial number 001-146-PT printed lower right on the reverse. The front shows the statue of the Virgin of Fátima as venerated in the Capelinha das Aparições, crowned with the jewelled diadem given in 1942 by the women of Portugal. The image is set against a pale green ground with a geometric lattice pattern, with the invocation and the sanctuary logo at left. The card is in good condition.

The reverse carries the Oração do Anjo, the prayer that according to tradition was taught in 1916 by the Angel of Portugal to the three shepherd children Lúcia, Francisco and Jacinta at Loca do Cabeço, preceding the Marian apparitions of 1917 at Cova da Iria. The prayer invokes the Holy Trinity and asks for the conversion of sinners, a central theme of Fátima spirituality. Cards of this kind are sold at the bookshops and stalls around the sanctuary of Fátima and travel, through pilgrims, throughout the Portuguese-speaking world.
