The Cultural Dictionary - encyclopedia for general development
The Cultural Dictionary - encyclopedia for general development
In 1992, Het Cultureel Woordenboek was published, edited by Prof. Dr. GA Kohnstamm and Dr. HC Cassee. It is an encyclopedia that is as playful as it is informative of what belongs to our culture and what every generally educated Dutch person should know. The book became an outright bestseller and, according to Hugo Brandt Corstius, a conversation piece ('We look it up in the Kohnstamm.') This reissue of Het Cultureel Woordenboek has been completely revised and expanded. Arranged according to a large number of areas of knowledge, it provides short, clear descriptions of those concepts, names, facts, events and sayings that should belong to our cultural baggage. This makes it not only a handy reference work, but also a readable compendium of Dutch culture in the broad sense. The areas of knowledge covered include the natural sciences, mathematics, technology, biology, medicine, economics, law and justice, geography and history, literature, music, dance, theatre, architecture and film. The Cultural Dictionary was created under the auspices of the Social Science Council (SWR) of the Royal Academy of Sciences and contains more than 300 illustrations. The editorial staff includes Jens Arnbak, Hans van den Bergh, Christel van Boheemen, Frits Bolkestein, Pieter Brattinga, SJ Doorman, Cees Goedkoop, Hans Heestermans, Liesbeth Koenen, Nico ter Linden, Richter Roegholt, Ite Rümke, Rik Smits and Pieter Steinz.
