GUP Magazine issue 64, The Silhouette Issue, published in 2020. This issue of the Amsterdam photography journal Guide to Unique Photography is devoted to the silhouette as a form of abstraction: what a contour reveals or instead conceals of what lies behind it. The cover features a work from the Betelgeuse series by Madeira-born photographer Igor Pjorrt, in which the explosive potential of the eponymous super-star is metaphorically linked to the complications of long-distance love. The back cover carries a Fritz-Kola advertisement. The magazine is in good condition.
The editors brought together for this issue a wide range of conceptual approaches to abstract photography, including Kacper Kowalski (Polish snowscapes from a bird's-eye view), Carolle Benitah (prints enhanced with gold leaf), Popel Coumou (handmade maquettes composing uncanny interiors), Ulrich Lebeuf (the essence of contemporary urban conflict), Andrea Grutzner (kaleidoscopic impressions of late-capitalist university spaces) and Philip J. Brittan. Further contributions come from Antigone Kourakou, Egor Fedosov and Ana Zibelnik, winner of the very first GUP New Dutch Photography Talent Award. GUP was founded in Amsterdam in 2005 and remained for over fifteen years one of the most important international platforms for conceptual art photography. The print edition ceased in 2023 after issue 70, which places the entire backlist permanently out of print.
