GUP Magazine issue 44, The Raw Issue, published in February 2015. This was the first issue of the Amsterdam photography journal Guide to Unique Photography under new chief editor Katherine Oktober Matthews, and the cover put the theme on display at once: an inverted portrait against a black background, eyes wide open, photographed from above or deliberately printed upside down. The back cover shows a subscription advertisement featuring an image of the previous issue 43, The Sweet Life Issue. The magazine is in good condition.

The theme of "raw" was opened by the editors as an investigative question: what do we actually mean when we call a photographic series raw, free of manipulation, unfiltered, close to its subject. The main interview is with Mike Brodie, also known as The Polaroid Kidd, who in 2013 caused a stir with A Period of Juvenile Prosperity, documenting his years living among American train-hoppers. In this issue he speaks about his new monograph Tones of Dirt and Bone, shot on Polaroid between 2004 and 2006. The issue also features work by Nadine Blanke, Asger Carlsen, Cyril Costilhes, Linelle Deunk, Jens Juul, Sofie Amalie Klougart, Stacy Kranitz, Brian Merriam, Klaus Pichler, Gary Schneider and Eva Stenram, with long-reads by Erik Vroons and Jim Reed. GUP was founded in Amsterdam in 2005 and remained for over fifteen years one of the most important international platforms for conceptual art photography. The print edition ceased in 2023 after issue 70, which places the entire backlist permanently out of print.
