Glass Advertising Ashtray, Garage Schouten Polsbroek, Netherlands, c. 1960-1970

Added to the archive

This object has found a new owner and is now part of The Collectionist archive.

A glass ashtray with an embedded promotional photograph, from Garage Schouten in Polsbroek. The base shows a sepia-tinted aerial view of the garage premises, surrounded by the business details in black printed lettering: name, address, telephone number, and the description "Auto- en Rijwielreparatie, Taxibedrijf" (car and bicycle repair, taxi service). The rim is cut glass with a serrated profile. The piece is in good condition.

Glass advertising ashtrays were a common promotional gift in the fifties, sixties and seventies for garages, cafés and local traders. They were made in series with a personalised base photograph or text, and served both as a functional object and as a brand carrier on the counter or in the waiting room. This example is a small but precise document of a vanished local economy.

Curator's note

The four-digit telephone number dates this object more precisely than any stamp: this is the Netherlands before the great number expansion of the 1980s.
