Paperback edition of De mooiste Nederlandse sagen en legenden, a collection of Dutch myths and legends published in 1999 by Verba, adapted by Merit Roodbeen and illustrated by Pol Dom. The book gathers sixty-two retold folk tales from across the Netherlands, from the far north to the deep south, accompanied by black-and-white illustrations. The cover shows signs of use, with a crease to the upper left corner and light wear along the edges; the book is otherwise in good condition.
The legends in this collection are bound to place: a hamlet, a city such as Amsterdam, a region with its own ghost or giant. Alongside familiar tales such as that of the Flying Dutchman are many lesser-told fairy-tale narratives, peopled by figures from every walk of life. The illustrations by Pol Dom, an artist who illustrated many Dutch folk and children's books in the first half of the twentieth century, give the book an old-fashioned atmosphere that matches the oral tradition from which these stories come.
