A hand-painted dog sculpture in composite material, depicting a dog with beagle-like proportions: compact build, drooping ears, a gently curved tail and an open, alert expression. The coat is painted in natural tones of black, brown and cream, with a subtle texture that lends character without tipping into exaggerated realism. On the underside, the finishing points are visible, a detail consistent with the decorative animal figures produced across Europe in the second half of the twentieth century.
Decorative animal figures like this were made in large numbers in postwar Western Europe, for an audience that appreciated both dogs and interior objects. They were never intended as art objects in the strict sense, but as well-made, recognisable companions for a shelf or a mantelpiece. This example has that quality: the proportions are right, the expression is caught with precision, and the finish is tidy. The kind of object that quietly claims its own place.
