Divine Mercy holy card - "Jesus, ik vertrouw op U", Roosenboom Heerlen

Curator's note

The Divine Mercy devotion was only officially recognised by Rome in 2000; cards from the early post-war period document a popular devotion that developed for decades outside formal ecclesiastical sanction.

Holy card with a colour reproduction of the Divine Mercy image, the iconographic type originating in the apparitions to Polish nun Faustina Kowalska in the 1930s. The front shows Christ with slightly open arms and two rays of light emanating from the heart, with the caption "Jesus, ik vertrouw op U" (Jesus, I trust in You). The card bears the notation "Cum appr. ecc." and was published by Joh. Roosenboom of Heerlen. The reverse contains a Dutch-language devotional text on the meaning of the rays and the promise of protection.

Holy cards of this type were printed and distributed in large numbers from the 1940s onward through parishes, chapels and religious publishers in the Netherlands and Belgium. Roosenboom was one of the better-known Dutch publishers of religious printed matter in the post-war period. The card is in good condition with light age-related yellowing.
