Devotional card Saint Joseph with Christ Child - polychrome baroque statue Vachendorf Bavaria, Zunhammer

Curator's note

Teresa of Ávila wrote that she had never asked anything of Saint Joseph that was not granted — a statement that became so central to Josephine devotion that it was printed on dozens of devotional cards, from Bavaria to Latin America.

Devotional card with a colour photographic reproduction of a polychrome and gilded baroque statue of Saint Joseph, housed in the Pfarrkirche of Vachendorf in Upper Bavaria. The figure shows Joseph in green robes with a golden mantle, holding the Christ Child, carrying a lily and surrounded by a golden glory. The base bears the inscription "St. JOSEPH". The photograph was taken by Engelbert Zunhammer, Pfr. The reverse contains the German family prayer "Zum hl. Josef um Familienglück" and a quotation from Saint Teresa of Ávila on devotion to Saint Joseph.

Vachendorf is a small community in Upper Bavaria southeast of Rosenheim. Devotional cards of church sculptures photographed by local priests were widely published in the second half of the twentieth century as modest mementos and devotional material for the parish community and visitors. The quotation from Teresa of Ávila — one of the most frequently cited statements on Josephine devotion in German-language Catholic literature — lends this simple card an unexpected theological weight.
