Devotional card Saint Francis of Assisi - gilded monastery church figure Eggenfelden, Bavaria

Curator's note

The Franciscan blessing on the reverse is one of the oldest in Western liturgy; its association here with a local monastery figure illustrates how universal texts acquired a concrete, place-specific grounding in popular devotion.

Devotional card with a colour photographic reproduction of a gilded wooden figure of Saint Francis of Assisi, displayed in a round-arched niche with a golden glory of rays in the monastery church of Eggenfelden, Bavaria. The saint is shown in Franciscan habit, holding a cross in one hand and extending an open hand in a welcoming gesture. The photograph was taken by Zunhammer, Pfr. The reverse contains the "Segen des Heiligen Franziskus" in German, based on the Aaronic blessing from the Book of Numbers.

Eggenfelden is a town in Lower Bavaria whose Franciscan monastery church served as an important local centre of devotion. Cards of this type were issued as mementos of a visit to the monastery or as devotional material for the surrounding faithful. The plain presentation of the reverse and the quality of the photographic reproduction suggest a publication from the 1950s or 1960s.
