Devotional card Saint Anthony of Padua - after Pieter Geraedts, Girl Guides Prayer, Elwa 134

Curator's note

The pairing of Geraedts' expressive, unsentimental Saint Anthony with the duty-bound Girl Guides Prayer makes this a document of Catholic youth culture in the Netherlands — a milieu that developed its own distinctive visual and devotional language.

Devotional card with on the front a colour reproduction of a painting by Dutch artist Pieter Geraedts, depicting Saint Anthony of Padua holding the Christ Child in a red tunic. The image is published by Elwa (nr. 134) and is distinguished by a restrained, almost expressionistic rendering of both figures. The reverse contains the "Gidsen Gebed" — the prayer of the Catholic Girl Guides movement, with the motto "Weest bereid" (Be Prepared) as its central theme.

Pieter Geraedts (1900-1980) was a Dutch painter and illustrator known for his religious works in a personal, modernising style that broke with the sweet sentimentality of traditional devotional art. The combination of his work with the Girl Guides Prayer on the reverse places this card in the context of the Catholic youth movement in the Netherlands, likely from the 1940s or 1950s. The card is in good condition with light yellowing.
