Devotional card Saint Anthony of Padua - Housewife's Prayer, Kunst-Adelt Maastricht

Curator's note

The prayer articulates the figure of Martha — busy and practical — against Mary as the contemplative ideal, and resolves that tension by understanding domestic work itself as prayer. A theology of the kitchen, in three stanzas.

Devotional card with on the front a colour reproduction of Saint Anthony of Padua, kneeling and lifting the Christ Child in adoration, against a warm ochre background. The illustration is signed "Asdri" and published by Kunst-Adelt in Maastricht (nr. 2711), printed in Holland. The reverse contains the "Gebed voor de Huisvrouw" (Housewife's Prayer), a three-stanza poem connecting ordinary domestic tasks — cooking, washing, scrubbing floors — to Christian devotion. The card bears the number K.288.

Kunst-Adelt was a Maastricht publisher of religious printed matter active in the first half of the twentieth century, known for its quality lithographic cards for the Dutch Catholic market. The Housewife's Prayer places this card in a specific context: the Catholic housewife who understood her daily labour as an act of prayer — a spirituality widely present in popular devotion from the 1930s to the 1950s. The card is in good condition with light yellowing.
