A vintage tin from De Gruyter, made for caffeine-free coffee beans and dating from the first half of the twentieth century. The cylindrical tin is finished in black, gold and red, with a stylised coffeepot and the text "De Gruyter's Cafeïne-vrije Koffie" on the front, a regulatory production text on the side, and the well-known De Gruyter slogan on the base. The tin shows honest signs of wear and fading print, in keeping with its age and use.
De Gruyter was for decades one of the largest grocery chains in the Netherlands, with over 700 branches at its peak. Their house-brand products, packaged in consistent house style and carrying slogans now embedded in Dutch retail history, are today sought-after objects for collectors of advertising ephemera, tinware, and postwar consumer culture. This coffee tin is a well-preserved example of the graphic identity De Gruyter used to put its name on the table.
