A vintage Dutch cookie tin by HEMA, dating from the 1950s, with the advertising text "Onverwachts visite?" and the slogan "Elk koekje een tractatie" on the lid. The tin features a graphic design in pink and cream with vertical stripes, a 1950s-style illustration of a woman's face, and images of biscuits. The side panel shows a HEMA shop counter with the text "Alléén bij de Hema". The tin has a removable lid and shows signs of use and light wear to the exterior, consistent with its age.
This type of tin served simultaneously as packaging for loose biscuits sold at the HEMA counter and as a promotional object for the stores themselves. The graphic style speaks directly to Dutch retail culture of the postwar reconstruction years: optimistic, domestic, and instantly recognizable. HEMA advertising tins from this period are collected as documents of postwar Dutch consumer design, a genre that developed its own distinct aesthetic outside the international design canon.
