Biscuit Tin, Jodenkoeken, De Winter's Banketbakkerij, Alkmaar, 20th Century

Curator's note

The fact that the Waag appears on this biscuit tin rather than the cheese market itself says something about how Alkmaar chose to present itself: as a city of architecture and commercial tradition, not just cheese.

A Dutch biscuit tin by De Winter's Banketbakkerij of Alkmaar, for jodenkoeken, dating from the second half of the twentieth century. The cylindrical tin has a cream ground with an all-round printed decoration in blue: medallions featuring the Alkmaar Waag, the city coat of arms and ornate Art Nouveau-style frames. The side panel notes inhoud 22 stuks and opgericht 1880. The tin shows light signs of use; the interior is unlacquered and in good condition.

De Winter's Banketbakkerij was an Alkmaar confectioner with roots going back to 1880, presenting its products in tins that wore the city's pride visibly. The Waag, centrepiece of Alkmaar's historic cheese market square, is the defining image on this tin. Jodenkoeken are thin, crisp Dutch biscuits with a long tradition, often packaged by regional bakers in their own house style. This tin is a fine example of that: local craftsmanship in a recognisable form.
