Apple Syrup Tin De Betuwe, Flipje Tiel, Conpura Prima Rinsche, 1950s

Added to the archive

This object has found a new owner and is now part of The Collectionist archive.

A vintage tin from the De Betuwe jam factory in Tiel, made for Conpura Prima Rinsche Apple Syrup and dating from the 1950s. The round tin is finished in dark green with a broad red band and the name De Betuwe in white capitals. The lid bears an image of Flipje with the text "Ik garandeer kwaliteit" (I guarantee quality), and around the rim of the lid runs the notice "Deze verpakking is niet geschikt om langen tijd te bewaren" (This packaging is not suitable for long-term storage), a detail that says something about the preservation techniques of the time. The exterior shows a fine patina with signs of use consistent with its age. The interior shows rust, consistent with seventy years of use. Purely decorative object.

Flipje was the mascot character of De Betuwe, created in the 1930s and for decades the face of the factory. The figure, a red and white dressed fruit character, became one of the most recognisable Dutch brand figures of the twentieth century. This tin is a modest but concrete document of that history, with its own history of use and the typography of an era when packaging design was still set by hand.

Curator's note

The warning on the rim of the lid is the best detail: a tin that advised against long-term storage, and then lasted seventy years regardless.
