The name 4711 refers to the house number of the building on Glockengasse in Cologne, where the product was produced by the Mühlens family from around 1794. It is said that in 1792 Wilhelm Mühlens received the recipe as a wedding gift from a monk. When the French troops occupied the Rhineland, the French commander, General Daurier, had ordered in 1796 that all houses in Cologne be numbered in ascending order, in order to put an end to the confusing numbering in Cologne's small alleys and thus facilitate the billeting of his troops to ease
