Collectors Album Dutch Royal House, Postcards and Press Photos, 1898-1948

Curator's note

Albums like this were not assembled as investments but out of personal attachment, card by card, over a lifetime. The period covered runs from the inauguration of Wilhelmina to the immediate postwar years, making this a private record of a half-century of Dutch history as much as a collectors object.

A blue leather album with gilt lettering, filled with over one hundred postcards and press photographs of the Dutch Royal House, assembled over a period of fifty years. The collection spans the entire reign of Queen Wilhelmina, from her inauguration in 1898 to the postwar reconstruction period, and documents the House of Orange in both official and private settings.

The contents include portrait cards of Queen Wilhelmina, photographed by the Hague studio Ziegler in gala dress and Red Cross uniform; photographs of Princess Juliana as a child and young adult, taken by Stokhuyzen in Apeldoorn; multiple cards documenting the funeral of Queen Mother Emma on 27 March 1934; early press photographs of Princesses Beatrix and Irene, including skiing scenes and informal shots on a staircase; a birth card of Princess Beatrix inscribed "Een jaar ben ik" (I am one year old); portraits of Juliana with Prince Bernhard; and a drawn child's portrait signed "Ingel 1945". The Golden Coach before the palace is also represented. The album was compiled over decades by an unknown collector and reflects a personal attachment to the royal family sustained across half a century.
