In 'Great Expectations' Geert Mak tells and explains recent history as only he can. It is the sequel to the immensely successful 'In Europe', which was published fifteen years ago. A few years later the 35-part TV series followed with the writer in the leading role. In Europe was about the twentieth century and how that, in many ways, horrific period marked by two world wars, shaped us. 'Great Expectations' is about the first two decades of the twenty-first century. It picks up where 'In Europe' ended, in 1999. Mak sketches the atmosphere and mood at the turn of the century, the optimism that was rampant at the time but that gradually disappeared, the feelings surrounding the introduction of the euro, the consequences of the attack on the Twin Towers, the situation in Eastern Europe and Russia, the banking crisis, the United States, Northern versus Southern Europe, and the refugees.
