An exceptionally early portrait of a man with a characteristic mid-19th-century hairstyle and cravat, depicted in an oval frame printed on card stock.
The print is small, understated and subtle in tone, with soft contrasts and a sense of stateliness reminiscent of the dawn of photography.
The technique and execution suggest a transitional form between the early albumen print and the later carte-de-visite . The reverse is blank, which was common with early commercial portrait cards.
Technique: Albumen print on cardboard
Dimensions: approx. 10.5 × 6.5 cm
Condition: Good; light signs of aging and minimal stains, consistent with age
Origin: Probably England or United States
Portraits like this were often made in small studios or traveling studios shortly after the introduction of the wet collodion plate (1850).
The oval frame and understated presentation give this work an almost timeless quality — a glimpse into the early days of modern visual culture.
