A stately late 19th-century portrait of a man with an imposing moustache, dressed in a dark suit with a velvet collar.
The portrait was made by J. Langhans , Ku.K. Hof-Photographer (Imperial and Royal Court Photographer) in Prague , around 1890 .
The reverse shows rich graphic printing in green ink with numerous medals and awards — a trademark of Langhans, who also made portraits of monarchs and intellectuals of his time.
Technique: Albumen photo on cardboard ( cabinet card )
Dimensions: approx. 16.5 × 10.8 cm
Condition: Good, light surface discolouration
Origin: Prague, Austro-Hungarian Empire
Johann Langhans (1851–1928) was one of the most famous photographers of Central Europe. His studios in Prague and Marienbad achieved international fame.
The careful composition, soft shadows and graceful serrated edges typify the transitional period between the formal 19th-century and the more natural 20th-century portrait style.
