Antique Delft blue wall plate with windmills – De Porceleyne Fles (Royal Delft), ca. 1911

Sale price£178.00 GBP

This antique wall plate is a refined example of early 20th-century Delftware, made by Royal Delft – De Porceleyne Fles around 1911, based on the year code AG as documented in the official year code tables.

The painting depicts a typical Dutch landscape with windmills by the water, executed in soft shades of blue with a calm, balanced composition. The windmills are painted simply and precisely, with great attention to space, air, and reflection.

The painting style is intrinsically linked to the late 19th-century Delftware tradition, in which classical landscape motifs and restrained brushwork were consciously continued, even into the early 20th century. This makes the plate stylistically classic, despite its later production date.

The glaze exhibits fine, even crackle, consistent with the object's age and perfectly in keeping with authentic Delftware from this period. On the back are several historical markings and an old paper label with the inscription "porceleyne fles – 1896 – A. Guerain." This dating differs from the year code and is likely due to confusion between a year and the name or initials of the painter or registrar.

The plate features a metal hanging system and is clearly intended as a decorative wall piece. A characterful and well-documented piece for lovers of classic Delftware and Dutch landscape iconography.
