A classic Victorian portrait of a young man, elegantly dressed in a waistcoat and shawl collar, with a determined yet refined gaze.
The photograph was taken by J.W. Margetts , a photographer at 404 Kingsland Road, London , during the heyday of the carte-de-visite .
The front is bordered with a fine red line, typical of English studios of the 1870s, and the back features the photographer's signature in red.
Noteworthy detail: the name “Arthur Sandylotts” is noted in pencil — presumably the person portrayed or a previous owner.
Technique: Albumen print on cardboard ( carte-de-visite )
Dimensions: approx. 10.4 × 6.4 cm
Condition: Excellent; minimal discoloration, sharp print, beautifully preserved hue
Origin: London, United Kingdom
JW Margetts was active in London in the second half of the 19th century, a time when portrait photography was developing into a form of bourgeois self-representation.
His work is characterised by simplicity and precision — a quiet elegance without unnecessary props.
