Hand-painted icon of the Mother of God and Child, executed on a wooden panel with gold leaf. The depiction follows the Byzantine tradition of Eleusa, recognizable by the tender embrace and the restrained expression. The panel has minor wear along the edges.
The back features a photograph of a nun working in an icon studio, as well as a handwritten note: “Jerusalem 1977. May. Mother Anna in the workshop of the Sam. Orth. Church, painting icons. With the nun Mona.” These accompanying elements convincingly place the piece in an Orthodox studio in Jerusalem circa 1977 and provide it with a clear historical context. Comes with the original hanging bracket.
