The wicked feather

The memory of an intense friendship from adolescence between Gosse and the girl Rixt van het Slot prompts the young man, who has found work in the USA, to return to his native country when he inherits a dilapidated ferry house. He rebuilds the ferry house and also tries to regain his friendship with the young woman. This love story is interwoven with the hopeless battle of the romantic ferry against the businesslike new bridge over the river.

Dance on the shore

A strong and special novel. The many figures are all convincingly lifelike. Nature forms a completely unemphatic unity with the lives of people, the composition, despite many surprising twists, is balanced, the dramatic end of an oppressive inevitability. The main characters of Dance on the Bank are the fiery and strong Rosa, the girl from the inn who still does the hard hunting along the migration path, and Warner, the independent, freedom-loving man who marries her. They live on an island in the roughest part of the swamp, which smells of water mint and calamus and is surrounded by man-high reeds. Other figures are Warner's opponents, the wealthy landlord Siebren, a lame musician, his friends, father and son, from the shipyard The Mermaid , and the hunters and fishermen whom he, devoting his life, defends against social injustice.
