The 50's

The 50's. The decade of reconstruction and thrift. But also hula hoop, petticoat and rock 'n' roll. From Berinis and belly sliders. Enjoy goose plates and people who annoy you at the kitchen table or cozy by the coal stove listening to Snip and Snap on the radio. A pleasant time, but also a period in which many changes were announced. We watched television for the first time, even though it was at the neighbors' house. We replaced the whisk with an electric mixer and we no longer ground the coffee by hand. Bakelite was replaced by plastic and formica was the new wonder material, durable and available in all kinds of fashionable colours. We drank our first bottle of Coke while listening to BillHaley. Often - because all our family photos are black and white - we think in shades of gray when we try to remember that period. This book gives those years their color back.
