Paris nr. 483

Museum postcard with a photographic reproduction of "Les Trois Grâces" by French Rococo sculptor Étienne-Maurice Falconet (1716-1791), published by A.N. Paris under number 483 with the notation "Musée du Louvre". The sculpture shows three standing female nude figures jointly supporting a decorative vase with clock face — a typical example of the playful allegorical decorative-functional sculpture of the eighteenth century. The photographic quality of the reproduction is high; reflections in the mirrored surface in the background convey the spatial context of the Louvre gallery. The reverse is unused and blank, with the notation "Made in France / Fabriqué en France".

Falconet was court sculptor to Louis XV and worked on commission for Madame de Pompadour, the most influential art collector of his time. He later departed for Russia, where he created the famous equestrian statue of Peter the Great in St. Petersburg. "Les Trois Grâces" belongs to his earlier Parisian period and embodies the lightness and elegance characteristic of the French Rococo. The A.N. Paris Louvre series to which this card belongs comprised more than five hundred numbers and is one of the most complete early photographic inventories of a European museum.
