The shoulder is decorated with a cobalt blue floral motif in flowing brushwork, flanked by two horizontal blue bands, one at the shoulder and one along the foot. The lower part of the wall is unglazed, revealing the raw clay texture, while the upper part carries the characteristic salt glaze of Rhenish production. The piece is in good condition with the signs of use that belong to its age.

Cologne stoneware belongs to one of the oldest and most widely distributed ceramic traditions in Europe. From the late Middle Ages, jugs, pitchers and beakers from the Rhine region were traded across the continent. The combination of grey stoneware with cobalt blue decoration and salt glazing was introduced in the seventeenth century and remained the standard for utilitarian pottery in this region well into the nineteenth century. This example, with its simple but carefully executed floral decoration, belongs to that long and stable tradition.
